So you are planning to go to Vegas and do things you want to leave behind there.

But there will be days when you want to experience things beyond the city limits but be back in time to enjoy the Vegas night life.

1/ Destination Oatman, AZ where Route 66 meets ‘The Old West’

Mileage: dependent on which route you take.

Things to see and do: head to www.oatmangoldroad.org . Check the of the shoot outs and enjoy meeting the burros, they’re wild.

Directions: A suggested route is from Las Vegas head south toward the Laughlin – Bullhead City area on U.S. Highway 95, then turning on state Route 163 to the Colorado River towns, a drive of about 90 miles. Two routes access Oatman from Bullhead City, a 25-mile, unpaved scenic route using Silver Creek Road and an all-paved, 35-mile route using Arizona Route 95 south to Boundary Cone Road, east to Historic Route 66 and north to Oatman.

2/ Destination:  Boulder City – “A world away for a day”.

Mileage:  26 miles from Las Vegas

Things to see and do:  Southern Nevada Railroad Museum  Raft down the Colorado River  Hoover Dam  Hike – bike or take the zip line in Bootleg Canyon.

Directions: Take I-515 S which becomes US-93 S which becomes Nevada Way. Bear right on Arizona St. then take a left on California to downtown.

3/ Destination:  Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Scenic Byway

Mileage:  146 miles roundtrip

Things to see and do:  Boating, Fishing, Water Sports, Hiking, Picnic Areas, Valley of Fire State Park.

Directions:  Take S Boulder Hwy (US-93S) to Lakeshore Rd (NV-166) turn left. From Lake Mead take E Lake Mead Pky, turn right on Northshore Rd and left on Valley of Fire Hwy (NV-169) then right on Visitors Center Rd. Take NV-169 west to I-15 S for your return to Vegas.

4/ Destination:  Mount Charleston, Red Rock Canyon & Spring Mountain.

Mileage:  36 miles from Las Vegas to Mt. Charleston, 52 miles roundtrip Red Rock Canyon & Spring Mountain State Park loop

Details:  Start early for a hike in Red Rock. Bring a camera, water and sun protection. Lunch at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, and then make for the mighty Mt. Charleston. Enjoy the view then back to Vegas for dinner.

Directions: Take I-15 S to the Blue Diamond cutoff (Hwy 160), take this to Hwy 159, turn right to Spring Mtn. Ranch State Park and Red Rock Canyon. Continue on Hwy 159 which becomes Charleston Pky. Take I-15 N to 95 N to Kyle Cyn (NV-157) up to Mt. Charleston Peak.  Take 95 S back to Las Vegas.
