Day 2 – Ha Noi to Mai Chau (Approx. 180 km)
Although the traffic in Hanoi gets really busy, we’ll start at the edge of the city and quickly leave the traffic behind and enter the countryside towns to the south. After a couple of hours of small towns and farmland, we’ll be able to see the mountains ahead As we enter the area of the White Thai tribe we’ll stop for some hill tribe style lunch in a traditional wooden-framed building. As the road twists through the jungle-covered mountain, we’ll continue further into the mountains. We’ll stop at the top of White Rock Mountain for a stunning view across the Mai Chau Valley, set amongst small villages of wooden stilt houses and traditional farming families. There, we can watch the sunset over the rice paddies and mountains. Stay in Poom Coong village
Day 3 – Mai Chau to Son La (Approx. 200 km)
Today we ride near Hoa Binh Lake and view some great waterfalls continuing on to the Moc Chau Plateau. Here we will see tea plantations then follow the Laos border travelling through Hill Tribe villages with their stepped rice terraces.
Day 4 – Son La to Dien Bien Phu (Approx. 240 km)
We are in the Laos border region as we travel the mountain roads we will pass through small villages coming to the Nam Ma River. There are interesting things to see on the next stage of our travels, such as the Muong Luan Tower and Museum of the Dien Bien Phu victory. We will see the underground tunnel complex a stark contrast to the surrounding beautiful scenery.
Day 5 – Dien Bien Phu to Lai Chau (Approx. 200 km)
We remain near the mountains of the Laos border. As we travel the small mountain road, we have the opportunity to see the great scenery. In these Ethnic minority areas there are wooden stilt house villages in and along the steep rice terraced valleys. We will have the opportunity to visit some hill tribe markets to see what the locals buy. Today we will explore Pu Sam Cap Caves.
Day 6 – Lai Chau to Sa Pa (Approx. 70 km)
Today gives us more mountain riding and some waterfall along the way. The first is Tac Tinh Waterfall. The views are amazing as again we travel the steep valleys and memorable stepped rice terraces. We travel through the O Quy Ho Mountain Pass (2,035 metres) and stop to view The Silver Waterfall. This afternoon we reach Sa Pa town and our rest day.
Day 7 – Sa Pa (Approx. 0 km)
Today is a free day to explore the town and visit the local markets. If you didn’t yesterday, today again you’ll have the option to visit the world’s longest cable car ride to the top of Fan Si Pan Mountain at 3,140 metres, the highest point in Vietnam.
Day 8 – Sa Pa to Bac Ha (Approx. 170 km)
To start the day, a steep winding road leads us off down the mountain to the busy border town of Lao Cai where we can stop at the busy Chinese border gate. Following the border, the road twists and winds along the high peaks and steep valleys. You can see stepped rice paddies everywhere and tiny wooden houses halfway up the slopes. We’ll wind along the side of the giant Chay River Dam and then head towards Bac Ha town, which is famous for its hill tribe markets. Here the many different tribes of the area can be found bartering and swapping their goods.
Day 9 – Bac Ha to Ha Giang (Approx. 180 km)
Our riding to today will take us along steep mountain road. A visit to the Palace of King Hoang A Tuong. After which we follow the Chinese border offering us great views. There are many hill tribe villages as we ride into Ha Giang province
Day 10 – Ha Giang to Dong Van (Approx. 210 km)
Being in the Ha Giang province, the limestone Karst formation mountains are the most impressive in the country and our road takes around, over, and through them on an amazing ride. The Ma Pi Leng Mountain Pass is surely one of the best roads in Vietnam. Along the way, we’ll make many stops to look out over the steep cliffs and high valleys. A climb of over 1,500 metres will take us to Dong Van town. We visit the old French fort set on top of a high cliff. The stairs are steep and many, but it’s worth it for the panoramic views of the area.
Day 11 – Dong Van to Ba Be Lake (Approx. 240 km)
We’ll leave on the Ma Pi Leng Mountain Pass, climbing over 1,500 metres, surely one of the best roads in Vietnam. We’ll make many stops to look out over the steep cliffs and high valleys. Heading south will take us on small roads through steep cliffed mountains. Carrying on, we’ll head into Ba Be national park and make our way to the wooden stilt house we will stay in. We may have time to jump on a boat to explore the lake. Waterfalls, caves, jungle, and mountains make this a truly beautiful place. Stay in as tribal homestay
Day 12 – Ba Be Lake to Ha Noi (Approx. 230 km)
Breakfast at the lakeside. Leaving the lake, we have hills and countryside for the first half of the day. In the afternoon you’ll gradually see the towns get bigger and the roads more crowded, but we’ll take the easiest route back to the city and go to The Royal Enfield showroom. Finishing our riding outside of the city centre, we take a taxi into Ha Noi city.
